While we are waiting for the books to be released (we expect it to be in March), let's talk about why and how I came up with the idea of making Have a Merry Day Coloring Book :)
I have actually been thinking about doing MerryDay coloring book since I had my MerryDay Page. The idea never got realized as first, at the time, I didn't have enough drawings to compile into a book and second, I was afraid it would not be interesting enough as people might think it as a thing for kids only. Then the idea of Adult Coloring Book came inthe book market and got more and more popular, I looked at my sketchbooks and realized I might have enough drawings for a book. Why not try making one?
So, where have I got my ideas for these 80 pages of drawings? Thanks to my 365 days I draw project, in which I intended to draw everyday for a year in 2012. Unfortunately, as each day I drew under a specific prompt, the project got harder and I didn't enjoy it anymore. So I stopped the project at day 143 and a year or so later I started another project called draw everyday. This time I just drew something everyday, trying to develop my style from pencil lines to marker and then watercolor painting. Then when I began to think about having my own published work, one of my illustrator friends told me I didn't need to do 'projects' anymore, it's about time I do a real professional work. So, I dropped the everyday project and focused on using what I have drawn in the past 2-3 years, adapting and compiling them into this book. In another word, this book is like a drawing history to me :)
This drawing was a part of draw everyday project, done with markers on a small brown paper book.
I expanded the idea into a full page by adding surrounding details and a bit of smiling raindrop and rainbow gimmick to give it a story. It turns out to be one of line art pieces I like most :)
Above are sample pages of my Merry Coloring Book, you can take a look at more pages on my MerryDay Page's album here.
Last but not least, someone asked me if the book's paper was thick enough for watercolor painting. So, I tried painting this page with watercolor paint and found it very satisfying. The paper is smooth white with 120 gram thickness. It can hold some amount of water and looks fine with one or two color layering. I don't think it's recommended for super wet painting though.
So, this is my latest work to be released in March! The book's price is $5 us dollar. I ship internationally. If you are interested, mail me at email@example.com and I will calculate the shipping fee to your country for you.
I hope you enjoy this post and love what I have as much as I do. Have a merry day!
